The Illiterati - “Cigarette Girl”

It’s hard to choose where to start heaping the praise on what I consider to be a perfectly crafted pop gem.  This is one of those occasions when I can’t think of any musical comparisons that do it justice (sometimes also known as a cop out).  So I’ll start instead by saying that I first became obsessed with the song when I heard these lyrics: “He used to say / I don’t want to be alone forever / But I’m afraid that I might be alone forever.”

As for The Illiterati, their minimalist website was last updated in April of 2006 and their myspace blog in July of 2006 (though the account has been logged in to recently) so I’m going to take a stab in the dark and say that they’re most likely defunct.  Bummer.  Well sack up for what is probably some posthumous listening with the depressing knowledge that there may not be more where this came from.

Since discovering this song a few years ago, I’ve made it my personal mission to share it with (read: force it on) as many people as possible.  And so the quest continues…
